French Macarons |
My sister-in-law surprised me with a very special treat, French macarons from Etsy's Sparkle Macarons. I recently tweeted about them because they are so beautiful and she thoughtfully sent me some cookie art!
The package they came in was cute and practical because it also acted as a little cooler with a cold gel pack in the bottom. I couldn't wait to try them and set up a pretty little tray of the lavender and passion fruit to share with Mike straight away. I was pleasantly surprised by the texture, light and crisp on the outside, soft and slightly chewy on the inside with luscious cream to bridge the layers. There's definitely a big difference between chewy coconut macaroons and these cream-filled sandwiches in an array of unique flavors.
After my first taste I declared "I want to learn how to make these" but the recipe is rather complicated even with the simplest of ingredients like sugar, egg whites, almond flour, and cream of tartar. I will not be tackling this mountain anytime soon but as far as I can tell it's like a meringue with almond flour.
I wanted to share the wealth so I had a "tea party" with my sister and Mike (which paired well with a sunday football game... hehe). I know I'm a dork but I had fun. I made beet & goat cheese crustini, cucumber & dill tea sandwiches, and of course some good Irish breakfast tea. AND... a beautiful plate of French macarons.
My favorite flavors from the pack were Madagascar vanilla, rose, passion fruit, and salted caramel.
If you haven't tried these little lovelies before, I highly recommend having this delightful experience with a good cup of tea or coffee.
