Mad Mex in Pittsburgh
|
One of our new traditions is to stop to see my sister and brother-in-law in Pittsburgh on our way down to Florida on our trips. They always take us out to a cool restaurant that has great beer. This time on our way through, we went to a place called Mad Mex.
As we were walking in, I asked my sister if this place had good beer. She responded with something along the lines of "it's alright." I took her at her word for a bit and started contemplating some margaritas. When we got in and our names in for a table, she went to the bar and ordered drinks for her, Heather, and me.

Mike's Recipe, Jan. 2012 - Waterzooi
|
We received a great book for Christmas this year called The Best of American Beer & Food. It's full of cool recipes that utilize and pair with craft beers. I knew I wanted to do a recipe from it for my January New Recipe post, so I got to work flipping through it.
We often have a lot of beer in the fridge and basement here so I wanted to find a recipe that could utilize a beer we already had. The two beers I was most interested in cooking with were Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout and Weyerbacher Merry Monks' Ale (a tripel). Most of the recipes that called for a stout also involved grilling red meat. I figured I'd save those for the summer, so I ended up going with an intriguing recipe for Waterzooi that called specifically for a tripel-style ale. Merry Monks' would be perfect and its one of our favorite beers.

New Restaurant - The Old Toad
|
We had a very fun date night planned, to eat somewhere new and then go watch Cesar Millan at Rochester's Auditorium Theater!
A couple of our dinner ideas fell though though because they were closed on Sunday, Edibles and Lento (both will be added to our Upstate Bucket List). So we decided on a local favorite we've heard good things about called The Old Toad, a British pub. Good beer and homey food sounded wonderful on a cold winter evening. We had a nice time but unfortunately it wasn't perfect.

Second Trip - The Owl House
|
Back in November we went to The Owl House. We mentioned at the end of that post that we really wanted to bring my vegetarian sister back there over the holidays and we were able to do just that.
Heather and I arrived early and got the opportunity to sit at the bar and get a drink. There is something so pleasant about sitting at a quaint bar like that while being served wonderful beer. We came straight from work so it was a nice quiet way to wind down from the day before dinner. I was able to get a Stone Vertical Epic 11.11.11. We have a bottle of both 10.10.10 and 11.11.11 in our basement aging but haven't tried either. Getting a chance to understand exactly what we were aging was a treat. It's a Belgian strong ale with a fruity finish, one of my absolute favorite styles of beer.

New Restaurant - 58 Main
|
For December's new restaurant, we wanted to make it a point to go to a truly local location for us. That meant picking one of the many restaurants in the Brockport area. We didn't decide on the actual spot until the last possible moment. Our mood had us gravitating toward 58 Main, a diner with flashy signage on Main Street just north of the canal.
The Buffalo Bills were playing an evening game on this particular Sunday and they weren't doing well. We walked into the restaurant not necessarily expecting a sports bar scene, but we were greeted with a room full of several football-sporting TVs with several viewers. This didn't bother me at all. As much as I told myself I didn't need to watch the Bills lose badly, it was still nice to look up and see how they were faring.

New Recipes, Nov. 2011 - Thanksgiving
|
We've been in our home for a little over two years now and have had many wonderful family parties but not a Thanksgiving, until now! We've officially crossed the threshold into adulthood by hosting our first Thanksgiving complete with all the fixings and our own unique twists.
Mike made the Stuffing
I'm not sure why I got the urge to make one of my contributions the stuffing. When I first started thinking about what I wanted to make, my mind wanted something truly unique. After some thought, nothing really jumped out at at me. Then, while talking to Heather, I realized trying to be different just didn't make sense for such a traditional holiday. With a lot of her help we decided on a Classic Bread Stuffing with Sausage recipe from the November issue of Rachael Ray's magazine.

New Restaurant - The Owl House
|
Back when we went to Belgium Comes to Cooperstown in July, we were introduced to Pretty Things Brewery. The brewery representatives at their booth heard we were from the Rochester area and immediately brought up The Owl House. I wish I remember exactly how they described their relationship with the restaurant, but I believe they mentioned that ex-brewery employees moved to Rochester and opened it. Some online research to find the details came up empty. (If you know them, please post in the comments!). Regardless, that's the reason why it was high on our New Restaurants list.
We went ahead and made reservations for a Saturday evening right at the end of October. We waited that long because we wanted to make the trip an anniversary celebration for us. We started dating 14 years ago! The reservation didn't end up being overly necessary as the dining area was about half full upon our arrival at 6pm. I really appreciate going out to eat knowing a table is waiting for you though, so the fact that The Owl House is one of the few Western New York restaurants to support OpenTable is much appreciated.

Mike's Recipe for Sept. 2011 - Cubans
|
I struggled with picking a new Recipe for myself for September. I bit off quite a bit last month. I also enjoyed working with Heather to make her birthday lunch sandwich so it made sense to go with a sandwich for this. One thing is certain. It takes an abstract feeling to be a good cook. I'm definitely still searching for it.
We had plenty of cukes from our garden and they were just begging to be pickled. This was the inspiration for deciding to make a Cuban. It's hard to go wrong with pork, more pork, and pickles. I went in search of a good recipe. Two jumped out at me. Alton Brown's and Bobby Flay's. There is a very distinctive difference between the two. Alton's uses only deli meat. Bobby's includes slow cooking your own pork and making your own pickles. Did I take the easy way out and go with Alton's? Yes. I did decide to use Bobby's refrigerator pickle recipe though.

Heather's Recipe for Sept. 2011 - Gnocchi
|
I didn't over think my recipe this month. I've always wanted to make homemade gnocchi so the idea came easy. Mike and I love gnocchi but we usually get it pre-made (Wegman's Whole Wheat Gnocchi are very good) which always makes an easy dinner.
Watching these delicate pillows being made magically by Chefs on TV aways made my tummy growl with envy. My Grandma made dumplings growing up that were so comforting and I equate the same fondness with Italian gnocchi. They are made with simple ingredients but yet I feel like there has to be more than just mixing potatoes, flour, and cheese into a dough?
