New Restaurant - Pizza Plant
|
Last weekend we were on a Buffalo adventure kegerator shopping. Yes, our homebrewing itch has gotten crazy enough that we are getting a kegerator. I'll have more on that in a future post. We wanted to take advantage of our trip and pick a new restaurant for the site. A place called Pizza Plant came to mind. I knew next to nothing about it other than seeing it pop up on some friends' Untappd check-ins, which probably meant it had a good craft beer selection. I took a quick peek at their site and noticed some impressive beers on their tap list, so we decided to go for it. Heather and I often daydream about opening up a craft beer bar that focused on wood fired pizzas, so the pizza and beer combination was particularly exciting.
Pizza Plant is American Italian comfort food like traditional pizzas and big plates of pasta. The menu is, in a word, overwhelming. The sheer quantity of items combined with the kitschy, crowded, and hard to read design made picking a dish all but impossible. Now our kegerator shopping trip to that point was not going the greatest, which I'm sure contributed to our initial mood, but we were honestly having a bit of a mental breakdown when trying to pick what we wanted.

New Restaurant - Burrito Fresco
|
We decided last Saturday, to spend the afternoon in our Brockport, NY community with some shopping and lunch. Still feeling fairly new to this community, we want to try to be more connected and support it in some way. I've been doing some spring cleaning and decided to give Smarty Pants, a small local business, a second chance by trying to sell some clothing that has been taking up space in my closets. I tried selling some really nice, almost new dress pants back in December but was turned away because that type of clothing was not their focus. I was actually told by the owner that Mike and I were dressed cool and he would buy what we were wearing, so bring in a bag of that and we would be good. Fair enough. I took him up on that because I liked the overall business model of reduce, reuse. I try to be environmentally conscious and who doesn't like to save money as well by selling good conditioned clothing and then buying something at a discount!

Happy New Year!
|
It's 2013! That means we've been messing around with this blog for two years! We're excited to move into the new year continuing to enjoy great food and pursuing a healthier lifestyle. As posted earlier we're trying out a gluten-free diet for virtually the entire month of January. I hope it will lead to us finding a great balance that will make us both healthier. That said, we couldn't pass up a beer event at Tap and Mallet on New Years Eve. In case you didn't know, beer is not gluten free. A vintage beer social at our favorite pub was the perfect last hurrah before going into a beerless January.
I knew we had family coming to town for the holidays so I had been searching for a good event for the New Year. Most in the area are significantly expensive, so walking in with a group of seven doesn't really work. I was happy when Tap announced a beer social. $18 a person for a great beer sampling and pay-to-play food from their regular menu is hard to pass up. They were even kind enough to give me a reservation, guaranteeing us a table!

New Restaurant - Edibles
|
October 26th is our dating anniversary (yes, we still celebrate) so we decided to dedicate our October New Restaurant post to that. One Rochester restaurant that we have been meaning to check out is Edibles.
Edibles is on University Ave right near the Memorial Art Gallery. It's in an old building and from what I could tell it only features street parking. Thankfully, we didn't have a hard time finding a space when we arrived at around 6pm on a Friday. Outside the front of the restaurant was a nice outdoor seating area. Trees were lit up with Christmas lights and it all looked really inviting at dusk. Sadly, it wasn't even 50 degrees that day so that wasn't an option.

New Restaurant - John's Tex Mex
|
For years now, I had been hearing about a great place in the South Wedge of Rochester called John's Tex Mex. It wasn't until we started doing a lot of beer shopping at Nathaniel Square that we really gave it much thought as it is literally right next door to that great beer shop. Since I started my new job at the College at Brockport, we haven't had as many opportunities to do some shopping in Rochester. This past Saturday we decided to plan a little trip and it made sense to try out John's Tex Mex and look for some fun beer for the fridge at Nathaniel Square while we were at it.
John's Tex Mex is pretty small but nice and inviting. When we walked in we were greeted and told we could sit anywhere we wanted. Once we picked a spot, we immediately had someone come over to the table to ask us what we wanted. We opted for some chips and salsa while we looked over the menu.

New Restaurant - Tap and Table
|
A day planned of yard construction and home cooking with the in-laws changed to video games and dinner out because of rain. I didn't mind. The garden needed it and maybe we did too!
We decided to go to Tap and Table after reading tweets about Sunday special family-style dinners. Comfort food on a rainy relaxing day sounded wonderful! Tap and Table is a new restaurant opened by our favorite Tap and Mallet just this summer. We were very excited to try something new from them.

New Restaurant - The Blue Monk
|
The Blue Monk is a "Gastropub" in Buffalo NY that serves good food and beer. Their name references delicious Belgian beer made for centuries by monks which is their overarching theme, but they also respect all craft beer styles. This is our second trip out to Blue Monk to do a post but unfortunately the first time their kitchen was closed, late on a Sunday, something their website doesn't mention in their hours. Oh well, the second trip out was much more successful during the dinner time hour.

Ithaca Pairing Dinner At The Owl House
|
Beer pairing dinners are one of our favorite ways to spend an evening. We've been to several, the vast majority of which were hosted at Tap and Mallet. Our love for The Owl House has been well documented on the site. When an opportunity to see how they handle a pairing dinner during Rochester Real Beer Week came up, we had to take advantage.
In a strange coincidence, the dinner took place one day after our three-year wedding anniversary and it was a nice way to celebrate. Stranger still, the featured brewery of the pairing was Ithaca Beer Company, the same brewer that we featured in our beer selection at our wedding. The menu featured four courses and six beers. They also did two seatings, at 6pm and 8pm. We opted for the later one which was interesting. We got the impression that the kitchen and wait staff may have gotten some of the kinks worked out. Sadly, the Ithaca representative did not stay for our seating so we didn't get any nice introductions to the beer or food.

New Restaurant - Boardwalk Inn
|
When Family was visiting, they wanted to check out a local restaurant. Without a plan, we heading into town on a mission to learn more about our food community in Brockport, NY. First stop, Jimmy Z's, probably a local college favorite for late night fast food. The menu was full of fried this and that plus Rochester's favorite garbage plates which made us scuffle back out. We headed across the street to Barber's Grill, a local bar that was packed, so we moved on and found The Boardwalk Inn around the corner.

Avanti Pizza Delivery
|
Ever since we moved to the Rochester area from the Buffalo area, the hunt for great pizza and wings has been on. Maybe it's psychological or maybe the pizza just sucks around here, but the search has been a tough one. Growing up we always got some amazing pizza and wings from places like La Nova in Buffalo and Maria's Pizzeria (sadly closed) and Cafora's right near where we grew up.
It's fitting that we didn't find a comparable place in the Rochester area until we moved a bit back west to Brockport. After trying a couple local places and being somewhat unimpressed, my Mom mentioned that there was a great place in Medina called Avanti. Looking into it we were surprised to see that they had a second location on Main Street in Brockport. We ordered from there and have never looked back. After several orders we decided a post was needed!
