Everybody is Crazy 30 is not Old!
Happy 30th Birthday Mike!
I was thrilled to have a low stress week of half-days proctoring exams, leaving me lots of time to plan for Mike's Birthday full of good food and surprises.
I emailed Mike's boss asking if he could work remotely so we could be together in the comforts of home, even if he did end up being on the computer all day working on proposals and on the phone talking about SPRING deadlines. Anything related to SPRING is a good thing in Western NY. But, there is something wonderful about wintery days; PJ's, cozy blankets, and hot cups of yum while still accomplishing work. Did we achieve a low stress birthday work day? All I can say is we tried and that's all that matters!
The day started at 4:30 am for me with coffee and a bit of leftover whole milk (fat and coffee = delicious). I decided to decorate the house with orange and green balloons, fresh tulips, a peacock feather bouquet, and some of our favorite stuffed animals wearing bows, all while he was sleeping. It was all to emphasize the fact that we are still kids at heart, keeping us young forever! He woke up surprised!
Breakfast: Strawberry Tart with Balsamic Syrup Drizzle. Mike loves balsamic reductions! If you haven't tried this, it's so easy and yummy! Just reduce it down until thick.
Lunch: Taco Dip with organic Neufchatel cheese, Greek yogurt (instead of sour cream), our favorite salsa: Amy's Roasted Garlic, and topped with shredded cheddar and lettuce. Enjoyed with Oskar Blues Old Chub.
Dinner: Chicken Wings smothered with Old Chub Hot Sauce, organic cultured butter, and parmesan cheese.
Meaty Pizza with a homemade whole-wheat crust, my favorite pasta sauce from Buffalo, NY called Pellicano's, bacon, Italian sausage, pepperoni, peppers and onions.
We split a Brooklyn Chocolate Stout in adorably small snifters.
Dessert: Again keeping with my covert theme, I made chocolate ice cream cone cupcakes with fluff frosting and an ice cream cake made with homemade vanilla bean ice cream. Scraping vanilla seeds from a pod was a neat experience. It was sticky and smelled amazing! I made the crust with Chocolate Newman-O's and filled it with a new yummy find, Wegmans Creamy Caramel Dessert Sauce. I like this product because the ingredients inspection passed my test, with simple cream, sugar, corn syrup, butter, vanilla and salt.
Dessert Beer, good but intense: Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla Stout. Definitely a slow sipper.
What a great day for us both! I really just wanted to make comfort food. Sometimes, we need to take time to pamper the ones we love and not take life so seriously! After this menu, and my mother's amazing chocolate cake with chocolate cherry mice with Hershey Hugs for faces, we'll be pampering ourselves with lots of fruits and veggies!
